Romania election too close to call

BUCHAREST, Romania, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Exit polls from Romania Sunday reported the presidential election, between Adrian Nastase and Traian Basescu, too close to call.

Two separate polls taken as voting ended in the run-off election gave neither candidate a clear majority, the BBC reported Sunday.

One poll had Nastase with 50.7 percent against Basescu's 49.3 percent, while the other declared they both had 50 percent of the vote.

Nastase had earlier been the predicted to win but a late flurry of voting in the capital may have benefited Basescu, the BBC said.

Both candidates told supporters they were confident of victory.
