China sees increase in road deaths

BEIJING, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Chinese road accidents killed 96,870 people in the first 11 months of 2004, up 1.5 percent from the same period last year.

The Ministry of Public Security said Saturday that 435,740 additional people were injured in the 470,019 traffic accidents, reported Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency.

Severe accidents increased for the period, although the total number of accidents dropped 23.9 percent and the number of injured people fell 4.7 percent.

The 54 most severe accidents killed 838 people and injured 878.
