Yushchenko vows probe into mystery slaying

KIEV, Ukraine, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko vowed Friday to conduct a new investigation into a reporter's killing, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

The presidential contender said if he wins the Dec. 26 -runoff, he would do his best to get to the truth in the sensational 2000 murder of an independent journalist, a crime the opposition blames on top officials, Interfax-Ukraine said.

Yushchenko also promised to revise the privatization of a major steel plant, which the opposition considers illegal, the news agency said.

Ukrainian journalist Heorhiy Gongadze disappeared in September 2000. A headless corpse found in a wooded area weeks later was identified as his body, Interfax-Ukraine said.
