DAMASCUS, Syria, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Syrian authorities have foiled an attempt to sell and smuggle antiques and old coins, arresting three suspects, official reports said Friday.
Security forces uncovered the operation in the city of Homos in central Syria. They arrested three suspects for possessing six stolen items, the state-run daily newspaper al-Thawra reported.
The suspects confessed to possessing at least 35 other pieces, which they intended to sell and smuggle out of the country, the report said.
They included marble busts, bronze statues, a shield and a helmet, as well as silver pieces bearing the face of Alexander the Great.
The main suspect, from al-Rikka province in the northeast, had agreed with his accomplices in Homos to sell some of the antiques, and admitted to hiding 35 pieces and 100 old coins at his home, the paper said.
An official at the Department of Archeology and Museums was quoted as saying that the antiques were very old, but he did not state their value.
