BRUSSELS, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- European Union officials are trying to tamp down any expectations the country will soon become an EU member.
Pro-western presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko said this week in Kiev EU membership would be his top priority if he is elected on Dec. 26, the Times of London reported Friday.
But an EU spokesman in Brussels quickly poured cold water on the prospect.
"Our position has not changed," he said. "Membership is not on the agenda." Rather, the EU's administrative arm wants a "partnership plan" for greater cooperation with Ukraine, once it holds credible elections.
Meanwhile, Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg's prime minister, is preparing to take up the EU's rotating presidency next year and also trying to dampen Yushchenko's expectations.
"I can only warn against offering Ukraine the prospect of full membership. (But) we need a special relationship with Ukraine that does justice to its strategic importance," Juncker said.
