Phoenix official dies in strange fall

PHOENIX, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Phoenix officials were puzzled Thursday about the strange death of their chief financial officer, who died when he tumbled from the roof of his speeding car.

The Arizona Republic said witnesses saw Kevin Keogh climb through the sun roof of his Mercedes in Scottsdale, stretch out his arms then tumble to the pavement while the vehicle continued on at 60 mph and crash into a car at a stoplight 300 yards down the road.

Investigators said the car's cruise control was set even though he was on a busy surface street at mid afternoon. Initial speculation was that the fatal fall was either an act of suicide or an attempt to "car surf," a particularly dangerous stunt in which a person stands on top of a moving vehicle.

The Republic said Keogh two years ago contracted a parasite in Mexico that affects the brain and had relapsed in recent weeks.
