PLO wants to reopen mission in Beirut

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- A Palestinian team led by Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday it wants to open a mission in Lebanon.

The team comprising Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia made the comment after talks with Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and other senior officials during their first visit to Lebanon since the PLO was evicted in 1982 by Israel's invasion.

"The talks were excellent and great as we exchanged our views on the situation in the Middle East and dialogue among the Palestinians, Lebanon and Syria is very important since they all have land occupied by Israel," Abbas told reporters.

Qureia denied media reports an Egyptian mediation was under way to restart peace negotiations with Israel in Washington next month.

"I have no knowledge of such bid," he said.

Palestinian sources said the talks also focused on the living conditions and status of more than 300,000 Palestinian refugees living in 12 camps throughout Lebanon.
