Death penalty sought in antifreeze case

ATLANTA, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- A Georgia woman serving life for killing her husband by feeding him anti-freeze, faces a possible death penalty for allegedly doing the same to her boyfriend.

Georgia prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty in the trial of Lynn Turner of Cumming. Turner has been convicted of poisoning her husband, Cobb County police officer Maurice Glenn Turner, in 1995 and faces trial in the death of Randy Thompson, a former Forsyth County sheriff's deputy and the father of her two children.

Prosecutor Jack Mallard said Turner, 36, is eligible for the death penalty because the crime was "outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible or inhuman; she has a prior conviction for murder; and the crime was committed for purposes of receiving money."

The announcement came during a Forsyth County court appearance during which Turner pleaded innocent to Thompson's death in 2001.

Hearings on motions are expected as soon as May, but the trial could be more than a year away, lawyers said.

Turner was sentenced to life in prison and will be eligible for parole in 14 years in the death of Maurice Turner.
