LA PAZ, Bolivia, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Independent parties and Indian rights groups have made significant strides in Bolivia's local elections, La Razon newspaper reported Monday.
With an estimated 80 percent of the ballots counted in local races throughout the poor landlocked country, Bolivia's grassroots left has won in several metropolitan areas. Full results are expected by the end of Monday.
Many Bolivians have become increasingly frustrated with corrupt politicians from the nation's traditional ruling parties, prompting the groundswell of popularity among emerging parties.
In October 2003, 80 were killed in protests and riots over their discontent with the free-market policies and alleged corruption of former President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, who resigned and fled the country.
Earlier this year, the Bolivian government -- now led by Sanchez de Lozada's former Vice President Carlos Mesa -- decided to bring the former president up on charges that his administration's policies were directly responsible for sparking the violence.
