BAGHDAD, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Two car bombs exploded Saturday near an entry to Baghdad's fortified Green Zone, killing 16 people, including five Iraqi police officers, and wounding 38.

Following the explosions, insurgents attacked the entry with small arms fire, but were unable to breech the coalition-controlled zone, CNN reported Saturday.

Medical officials said at least 16 had been killed in the twin suicide bombings and 38 others wounded. Police said one of the two car bombs contained about 882 pounds of explosive.

The Green Zone is home to Iraq's interim government and the U.S. and British embassies. It also is where most western journalists stay.

Also Saturday, in western Mosul, U.S. and Iraqi troops killed at least 12 insurgents who had attacked a patrol.
