Debate on emissions in Washington state

SEATTLE, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The Washington state Legislature will soon consider a bill mandating tough emissions standards similar to those of California.

"I think this is legal and doable and intend to introduce it early in the (next legislative) session," said state Rep. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, who chairs the House Transportation Committee, the Seattle Times reported.

Washington lawmakers concerned with the effects of global warming expect to face serious opposition from the automobile industry, which considers California's recent measures an illegal attempt to impose mileage standards.

"If you wait for the process to play out in California, it will be clear that no state has the authority to impose these kind of standards," said John Cabaniss, of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers.
