U.S. looks at U.N. report on reform

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department said Wednesday it will look at a U.N. report on reforming the world body to see if recommended steps would make it more efficient.

"Some important considerations for us while looking at the report are ... will the proposed changes improve the effectiveness of the organization and ... can the proposed changes achieve the broad consensus ... that would be essential toward implementing these proposed reforms," State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said.

He called the report "ambitious" and "serious."

The report, which makes more than 100 recommendations, allows the use of preemptive force and says no changes should be made to the U.N. charter. Ereli said the United States agreed with both positions.

The report also calls for an expanded U.N. Security Council.
