PYONGYANG, North Korea, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- North Korea demanded Wednesday South Korea's past nuclear experiments be a top priority in six-nation talks aimed at ending Pyongyang's atomic drive.
The North's Foreign Ministry also accused the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency of attempting to "hush up" the South's secret nuclear activities.
It is "illogical" for North Korea to "unilaterally dismantle its nuclear deterrent force unless the secret nuclear-related experiments of South Korea are thoroughly probed," a ministry spokesman told Pyongyang's state-run news agency, KCNA.
"Under this situation, the DPRK (North Korea) is left with no option but to increase its nuclear deterrent force," the spokesman said.
The comments were North Korea's first reaction to the U.N. nuclear watchdog's decision last week not to refer South Korea's past nuclear experiments to the U.N. Security Council.
"Double standards as regards the nuclear issues of the North and the South of Korea can never be allowed under any circumstances," the ministry spokesman said.
