Two freight trains collide; one dead

DADE CITY, Fla., Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Two freight trains collided head-on in west-central Florida's Pasco County Monday, killing one crewmember and injuring three others, authorities said.

WJAX-TV, Jacksonville, Fla., reported the accident occurred near Dade City, parallel to state Road 35.

Four CSX Corp. locomotives and about 15 cars were derailed in the accident about 2:30 a.m.

Jane Covington, spokeswoman for Jacksonville-based CSX, declined to disclose the names of those involved pending an investigation.

Each train had a two-member crew. One was carrying mixed freight from Waycross, Ga., to Tampa, and the other was carrying rocks from Miami to Wildwood.

Covington said it was too early to determine the cause of the accident, but said head-on collisions are rare because of elaborate safety switching systems.
