GAZA, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a Fatah armed wing called Sunday for Palestinians to support Mahmoud Abbas as its candidate in the presidential elections.
The group said in a leaflet sent to United Press International that al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades would support Abbas, better known as Abu Mazen, who would run in the presidential election due scheduled for Jan. 9.
The leaflet said that the group highly appreciated Fatah's Revolutionary Council's decision to pick up Abu Mazen as the movement's candidate, adding, "We highly appreciate the declaration of jailed Fatah leader Marwan al Barghouti decision to give the chance for Abu Mazen to run in the elections."
The group also called for national unity among the Palestinians and to protect Palestinian rights including the right of return for refugees and the establishment of the Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
It also called for reinforcing democracy in the Palestinian community and inside the Fatah movement.
