Blunkett calls for investigation of claims

LONDON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- British Home Secretary David Blunkett has asked for an independent investigation into claims he intervened in a visa application for his ex-lover's nanny.

Blunkett has denied any wrongdoing and Prime Minister Tony Blair said he had "full confidence" in his home secretary, the BBC reported Sunday.

Immigration minister Des Browne said Blunkett had "nothing to fear" as there had been "no impropriety."

The Conservative Party has demanded an investigation into the allegations.

On Sunday Blunkett asked Home Office permanent secretary John Gieve to appoint a person on Monday to examine the papers and the handling of the case.
