Digital TV sales expected to boom

WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Retailers predict booming digital television sales this Christmas season, alleviating the worries of industry officials and federal regulators.

Government and industry analysts had previously voiced concern that TV owners were switching too slowly from analog to digital, the Washington Times reported Saturday.

However, the Consumer Electronics Association, a trade group for manufacturers and retailers, has predicted about 7 million digital television sets will be sold this year.

"The numbers are very encouraging. We believe consumers are embracing this technology," says Jenny Miller, the Consumer Electronics Association's spokeswoman.

However, digital sales still lag behind analog sets. Almost 22 million analog sets are expected to be sold this year.

The Consumer Electronics Association and the FCC launched a public relations campaign in October designed to educate consumers about the digital TV conversion. The FCC printed brochures and introduced a Web site, dtv.gov, that includes shopping guides and frequently asked questions.
