CANTERBURY, England, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- The Archbishop of Canterbury has called for Anglican churches to stop using inflammatory words against homosexuals.

Rowan Williams sent a letter to the world's Anglican churches that said harsh language can lead to murder, the BBC reported.

Williams' letter came as the Church was in the midst of a controversy over the ordination of gay bishops. Some leaders strongly condemn homosexuality as being outlawed by the Bible.

"Any words that could make it easier for someone to attack or abuse a homosexual person are words of which we must repent," Williams wrote. "Do not think repentance is always something others are called to, but acknowledge the failings we all share, sinful and struggling disciples as we are."

Williams also wrote that some gay people felt their sexuality condemned them, and that lead to suicide.
