Ukraine court freezes election results

KIEV, Ukraine, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Ukraine's highest court suspended publication of the presidential election results Thursday to review complaints of vote-rigging, the BBC said.

The announcement was made just hours after liberal opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko filed an appeal over the Central Electoral Commission's claim Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych was the winner.

The commission's official tally Wednesday was 49.46 percent for Yanukovych to Yushchenko's 46.61 percent.

Yushchenko's supporters claim there was massive fraud in Sunday's election, corroborated by some international independent observers.

Former Polish President Lech Walesa, an ally of Yushchenko, arrived in Kiev to help resolve the crisis. Outgoing President Leonid Kuchma, an ally of Yanukovych, also asked Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus to mediate in the crisis.

Meanwhile, the new head of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, warned Ukraine there could be "consequences" for its relations with the European Union unless there was a serious and independent review.
