Lawmakers stalled on Medicare funding program

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A program that helps poor seniors pay Medicare premiums is under the threat of expiring Saturday, unless U.S. lawmakers overcome a legislative impasse.

The Senate approved a measure Tuesday extending the Medicaid program, which pays for Medicare premiums for the disabled and seniors who do not qualify for full Medicaid coverage because their incomes are too high.

But House Energy and Commerce Chairman Joe Barton, R-Texas, wants the $400 billion in annual spending to be fully funded.

Without a deal before Saturday, the program will run out of money until lawmakers reach a deal.

However, with lawmakers hoping to finish work for the year Friday, expectations are that an agreement will be reached.
