AURORA, Colo., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A fire broke out Thursday in a private day-care center in Aurora, Colo., killing an infant and injuring an off-duty deputy.

"We found the house fully involved in flames when we arrived," said Fire Department Capt. Chris Henderson, reports KMGH-TV, Denver.

An adult and four children were in the home when the fire broke out, fire officials said. Neighbors said the fire spread quickly, engulfing the house.

A Denver sheriff's deputy who lives in the neighborhood went in to try and rescue those in the house. But a 3-month-old boy in the home could not be rescued.

The deputy suffered smoke inhalation and was treated and released. The infant was not identified.

The fire gutted the garage and caused extensive damage to the second floor of the two-story home. Its cause is yet to be determined.
