NATO taps Canadian as top military adviser

BRUSSELS, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Canada's chief of defense was selected Wednesday to become NATO's chief military adviser, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Gen. Ray Henault will become the alliance's senior military authority, succeeding German Gen. Harald Kujat who has held the post since 2002.

Henault, who will act as chief adviser to Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, NATO's secretary-general, was chosen for his new role over Denmark's Gen. Hans Jesper Helsoe. The Canadian general's supporters said his experience was superior to that of Helsoe.
