Gunmen kill Saudi policeman, injure 8

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A Saudi policeman was killed and eight others were injured in a clash with gunmen in central Saudi Arabia, an interior ministry statement said Wednesday.

The statement said the incident occurred Tuesday night in the province of al-Kassim, 350 kilometers (218 miles) north of Riyadh, when police spotted the gunmen and tracked them to their hideout in the al-Qadissiyah neighborhood in Aneza.

It said the police came under heavy fire and a gunbattle ensued in which one policeman was killed and eight others injured, four seriously.

"Five gunmen were arrested during the clash, including two wanted terrorists, one of whom suffered a grave injury, and three suspects," the statement added.

It said police seized arms in the hideout, including automatic rifles, pistols, bombs and ammunition as well as computers and communication equipment and an amount of 38,000 Saudi riyals ($10,000).
