Spain arrests 17 separatist suspects

MADRID, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Seventeen suspected members of the Basque separatist group ETA were arrested throughout Spain in pre-dawn raids Tuesday, the EFE agency reported.

The Interior Ministry said more than 150 agents were involved in the sweep, which also included searches of 18 homes.

Investigators allege the suspects were involved in providing housing for terrorists, intelligence gathering and training militants.

There has been a steady stream of ETA member arrests following the capture of several of the terrorist group's leaders in southern France in October.

For 40 years, the group has staged violent attacks that have killed more than 800 people in their quest for an autonomous Basque region.
