Brazil and China bolster trade relations

BRASILIA, Brazil, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Brazil and China have signed several accords to bolster bilateral trade relations and increase trade volume, Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper reported Saturday.

Chinese President Hu Jintao met Friday with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in Brasilia where the two leaders signed an agreement for a meat sanitation certification accord that will open China to Brazilian products. They also approved accords on tourism infrastructure development and power generation, among others.

The two nations also decided to join forces for transcontinental efforts at tackling organized crime.

Upon his arrival in Brazil earlier this week, Jintao said he wanted to "push forward bilateral cooperation, as well as the relations of strategic partnership between China and Brazil."

In May Lula traveled to China along with a group of Brazilian businessmen to consummate a number of trade deals.

China is Brazil's third-largest trading partner behind the United States and Argentina, with Brazilian-Sino trade reaching $8 billion last year. Lula said Friday Brazil could "double that volume in three years" with Jintao saying it could go as high as $20 billion.
