Train crash kills 10 in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A speeding passenger train derailed, overturned and tumbled down a slope in the northern Philippines Friday, killing at least 10 people and injuring 115.

The train was headed for the capital Manila when it jumped the tracks and four of its eight cars fell into a 40-foot deep ravine, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported. The accident occurred before dawn near the town of Duhat, about 100 miles south of Manila.

The dead included a mother and infant and at least one other child. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals by rescue workers and local residents who came to their aid. Some of the bodies and survivors had to be lifted out of the ravine by a rope and pulley system.

Speeding on a sharp curve, heavy rains, and possibly missing bits of track may have all contributed to the accident, officials said.
