BRASILIA, Brazil, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Two of Brazil's leading political opposition parties will form an alliance in an attempt to defeat President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the 2006 elections.
Sen. Jorge Bornhausen, the leader of the right-wing Liberal Front Party, or PFL, said Friday that his party and Brazil's largest opposition, the center-right Social Democrats, or PSDB, were prepared to join forces and take on the president.
"Lula is a strong candidate, but he is not unbeatable," said Bornhausen.
Among the possible candidates the senator suggested were Sao Paulo Gov. Gerald Alckmin and Rio de Janeiro Mayor Cesar Maia, hailing form the PSDB and PFL respectively.
Lula and his left-wing Workers' Party defeated elections the PSDB candidate Jose Serra, a former health minister and handpicked successor of former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso in 2002.
