BEIRUT, Lebanon, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Iraqi State Minister Adnan al-Janabi said Wednesday Fallujah, west of Baghdad, has become a source of terrorism that should be wiped out.
Speaking to reporters after relaying a letter to Lebanese Prime Minister Omar Karami from his Iraqi counterpart Iyad Allawi, Janabi said, "Iraq has been facing for some time a security coup d'etat and deliberate attempts to crack Iraqi security forces."
"The Iraqi government was forced to wage a military assault on Fallujah to root out the terrorists and return Fallujah to its original inhabitants after all peaceful attempts failed," he said.
Three days ago U.S.-backed Iraqi forces began an assault on the city, a hotbed for Iraqi Sunni insurgents and foreign fighters led by Abu Musaab al-Zarqawi, the suspected leader of al-Qaida network in Iraq.
Janabi said restoring security and stability is a primary objective for the Iraqi government to pave the ground for holding general elections as scheduled in early 2005.
