Court refuses to release nuclear scientist

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Pakistan's supreme court has turned down a request to release from house detention the country's disgraced nuclear scientist on health grounds.

A.Q. Khan, who is regarded as the father of Pakistan's nuclear bomb, has been confined to his home near the capital of Islamabad since early this year when he admitted illegally transferring nuclear secrets overseas, the BBC reported.

The court said Khan is not seriously ill as claimed in a petition. Khan himself opposed the petition, filed by a friend, calling it illegal, the report said.

Many in Pakistan still consider Khan a hero.
