Brazil bus accidents kill at least 25

BRASILIA, Brazil, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- More than two dozen people were killed in separate bus accidents in Brazil, the latest in series of deadly crashes involving public transportation.

At least 19 people were killed Wednesday when a passenger bus collided with the truck carrying gas canisters in the central state of Goias.

Police at the scene speculated the truck driver -- who wasn't injured -- fell asleep at the wheel causing the accident.

Another bus wreck in the northeastern state of Alagoas killed at least six people, witnesses there said Wednesday, when the vehicle careened off the road and into a dam.

Several bus accidents in recent weeks have claimed dozens of lives. In October, more than 20 Brazilian religious pilgrims were killed when their bus veered off the road in the northeast state of Ceara.

The Brazilians on board were heading to Juazeiro do Norte to visit the statue of Roman Catholic priest Cicero Batista, who lived there until his death in 1934. Brazilians revere him as a saint for his work and, they believe, for once turning a communion to blood.

In September a school bus drove off the road in southern Brazil and plunged into a reservoir killing 16 children and injuring several more.
