China's Guangdong hit with drought

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- China's Guangdong Province is in the midst of one of the worst droughts in forty years, reported Xinhua, China's government-run news agency.

The reservoirs in Guangdong Province, home to more than 2 million people, dried out over the summer, and the land has become too dry to plant paddy rice. Even underground water resources have been running low.

Rain hasn't fallen on Guandong since August, and weather forecasters have said they expect the dry season to last through next April.

Some farmers have fled the area to seek city jobs. Others have been changing tactics to deal with the lack of rain. They have switched crops and are trying to grow vegetables, which need much less water than paddy rice and grow faster.

The government has given drought-afflicted villages funds to dig drinking-water wells.

Inspection teams have been dispatched to all drought-hit areas to assess the extent of the disaster and decide on further measures to help those affected.
