WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Saturday Democrats in Congress stand ready to work with George Bush as he heads into his second term as U.S. president.
Pelosi, the Democratic Party leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, was chosen to deliver the party's weekly radio address. In his address Saturday, Bush outlined many of his policy plans for his second term and Pelosi said congressional Democrats agreed with many of them.
Pelosi pointed out that, politically, the country is still split down the middle.
"But our partisan split, rather than being an excuse for inaction, must be a call to compromise and common sense," Pelosi said. "We stand strongest as a nation when we stand on common ground. I hope that in this term, President Bush will fulfill his renewed promise to be a uniter, not a divider."
Key areas both sides agree need attention are job creation, improved access to healthcare and education.
Issues in which the Democrats and Republicans differ include Bush's plan to create "Individual Development Accounts" for Social Security -- a plan Pelosi claims is "privatization" -- and the president's desire for additional tax cuts.
