Some Haitian deportations to be delayed

By LES KJOS

MIAMI, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The federal government may delay deportation of some undocumented Haitians, but there will be no permanent relaxation of deportation policy.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is recommending against a request to spare the Haitians from deportation by granting Temporary Protected Status, The Miami Herald reported Friday.

But for now, the deportations will not take place for Haitians from flood-ravaged portions of the country who are not convicted felons.

Haiti's interim government and Haitian advocates in this country had asked for the temporary protected status.

Hurricane Jeanne left flooding in Haiti's northwest region that killed 1,900 people and left 200,000 homeless.

"At this time, the Department of Homeland Security does not believe it is appropriate to recommend TPS for Haitian nationals residing in the United States," department spokesman Dan Kane said.

He said the temporary delay will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
