The queen, her husband Prince Philip and her children joined Alice's son, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, for the private ceremony in St. George's Chapel, Hellomagazine.com reported Friday. The princess's body was carried from the chapel by members of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, a regiment she served as honorary colonel.

The queen laid a wreath that said "in loving memory -- Lilibet and Philip." Lilibet was the queen's childhood nickname.

Princess Alice was the daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch, who served in the Navy with George V. Before her marriage in 1935 she traveled widely, visiting Africa, India and Afghanistan and helping to manage an uncle's farm in Kenya.

Her husband died in 1974, two years after their eldest son, who was killed in a plane crash.
