Katherine Harris wins second term in House

SARASOTA, Fla., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Rep. Katherine Harris, R-Fla., a major figure in the Florida vote-counting fiasco in 2004, easily won a second term in Congress.

Harris, 47, of Sarasota, Fla., won in a rematch of her race in 2002 with Democrat Jan Schneider, 57, a Sarasota lawyer.

Harris first gained national attention as Florida secretary of state in 2000. Many Democrats are still unhappy with her as she oversaw a recount of the race between President Bush and former Vice President Al Gore while serving as state co-chairwoman of Bush's campaign.

She resurfaced last week, when a motorist threatened her with his car as she and supporters were campaigning on a street corner in Sarasota.

Barry Seltzer remains in the Sarasota County jail in lieu of $500,000 bond. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

The arrest report quoted Seltzer as telling police: "I intimidated them with my car. I was exercising my political expression. I did not run them down. I scared them a little."
