BUDAPEST, Hungary, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said Wednesday he would pull his country's troops out of Iraq by the end of next March, Kossuth Radio reports.

"Until elections in Iraq ... we have a duty to participate in creating democracy there, but after that, it is impossible," Gyurcsany told the radio station.

Hungary has around 300 troops in Iraq and has until now been a solid ally of the Bush administration. Hungary joined the European Union in May this year. The country joined NATO in 1999 along with Poland and the Czech Republic.

Neither the announcement nor its timing came as a complete surprise to observers of the central European country.

The government had said last month it would reassess its Iraq policy after the U.S. presidential elections. There is also widespread public opposition to the Iraq war in Hungary.
