GOP maintains grip on governorships

DALLAS, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Republicans have maintained their control over a majority of governorships and could pick up another one in a close Washington state race.

Each party picked up two seats in Tuesday's election but the race between Republican Dino Rossi and Democratic Attorney General Christine Gregorie in Washington is a tie. A count of absentee votes will determine the winner.

Republicans still maintain a six-seat majority among the nation's governors and if they win in Washington they could add a seat. The Washington seat is open because Democratic Gov. Gary Locke decided not to seek a third term.

Four governorships changed political hands.

Republican Mitch Daniels defeated Democratic Gov. Joe Kernan in Indiana and Republican Secretary of State Matt Blunt defeated Democratic State Auditor Claire McCaskill in Missouri. He will succeed Democratic Gov. Bob Golden.

Democrat Brian Schweitzer defeated Republican Bob Brown in Montana to succeed Republican Gov. Judy Martz, and Democrat John Lynch defeated Republican Gov. Craig Benson in New Hampshire.
