Saudi Arabia seeks releasing its prisoners

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia reportedly said Sunday it was in contact with the United States to release Saudi prisoners held at the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Al-Riyadh daily quoted Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Prince Turki bin Mohammad bin Saud as saying contacts with the U.S. administration were aimed at "knowing the real reasons behind the detention of the Saudi prisoners."

He told the newspaper his government is demanding the prisoners either be formally charged or released and repatriated to the kingdom, adding he expected to "reach tangible results in the near future."

Turki also said officials were in contact with the interim Iraqi government to learnmore about Saudis who were recently arrested in Iraq and to "reach an understanding with the Iraqi authorities to hand them over."
