"Time after time, remakes fail to sparkle like the originals," said Alex Chesterman, founder of ScreenSelect.co.uk. "This poll is an indication that remakes can't compare with films, which were classics of their time -- and it also proves you just can't beat Michael Caine."

Voted second as the worst remake was Gus Van Sant's attempt to remake the Alfred Hitchcock horror movie "Psycho," followed by the 2004 release of the U.S. movie "Thunderbirds" staring Bill Paxton, which was a remake of the British TV series from 40 years ago.

Bridget Fonda's thriller "The Assassin," a remake of the cult film "La Femme Nikita" was voted third worst remake.

Also disliked remakes were: "Alfie" starring Jude Law, Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes," and "Charlie's Angels" starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu.
