Dirty tricks abound in Florida election

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Dirty tricks abound in Florida in this year's presidential race between President Bush and John Kerry, the St. Petersburg Times reported Friday.

Elections officials across Florida say voters are being approached by people misrepresenting themselves, and offering misleading or inaccurate information about how to cast their ballot.

The officials say voters cannot vote at home and do not have to answer personal questions before voting. They also say officials won't show up at private homes unannounced.

One Orlando woman said a woman appeared at her front door with a clipboard and asked who she was voting for. The resident told her, and the woman at the door said she would mark the vote down, along with that of the resident's daughter.

The resident thought she had voted until her daughter had second thoughts and called election officials.

In another incident, people with clipboards appeared outside the Hillsborough County Center with clipboards asking voters headed for the elections office if they'd ever been arrested, had outstanding parking tickets or any debt.

Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson said elections officials would never ask questions about debt.
