Kansas couple charged with slavery

WICHITA, Kan., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- A Kansas couple who ran a group home have been charged with slavery for allegedly forcing mentally ill residents to perform chores in the nude.

Arlan and Linda Kaufman appeared in U.S. District Court in Wichita Wednesday with their ankles in shackles, the Wichita Eagle reported Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Donald Bostwick ordered the couple held without bond while police investigated the case stemming from a 1999 incident in which people in the Kaufmans' care were found on a farm doing chores in the nude.

The Kaufmans were arrested at their home Tuesday after 20 FBI agents served search warrants on the two group homes and the couple's residence.

The newspaper said it conducted a review of federal, state and county records, and discovered allegations of sexual, emotional and physical abuse against the couple dating back to 2001.

The judge scheduled a Nov. 3 hearing to determine whether bond should be set.
