Protest against Jordan-Israel peace

AMMAN, Jordan, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Jordanians staged a sit-in outside the labor unions' building in Amman Tuesday to protest the peace treaty signed with Israel 10 years ago.

The protesters called for closing down the Israeli embassy after evicting the Israeli ambassador and scrapping the peace treaty signed with Israel on Oct. 26, 1994.

They also urged an immediate cessation of all types of normalization of relations with Israel.

"No Zionist embassy on an Arab land. ... Yes for the collapse of Wadi Araba treaty," read a placard brandished by the protesters.

The head of the engineers union, Wael Sakka, said the peace treaty failed to achieve the goal of ending enmity with Israel. Despite diplomatic relations, ties have not been normalized.

In Washington, the U.S. State Department lauded the agreement, calling it "historic."

"The Jordanians and Israelis have reaped significant benefits, including increased trade, improved security, and are moving forward on the path of mutual understanding," deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said, adding he hoped Israel would reach a comprehensive peace with all its neighbors, including the Palestinians.
