More misery ahead in Japan's quake areas

NIIGATA, Japan, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Nearly 100,000 people remained stranded in emergency shelters, cars and tents in quake-ravaged central Japan Tuesday, with aftershocks, cold and rain forecast.

The death toll has risen to 27 from the earthquake that hit Niigata prefecture at 5:56 p.m. Saturday, followed by two big aftershocks. More than 2,200 were injured in 34 municipalities.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said the quakes had damaged 3,134 homes and started fires in 11 houses, reported the Asahi Shimbun Tuesday.

About 47,000 households were without electricity Monday evening, 110,000 lacked water and 56,000 had no gas.

Powerful aftershocks are forecast, along with near-zero temperatures and rain. Also still dozens of communities in the area are cut off from the outside because of roads damaged or blocked by landslides.
