Last appeal for Texas death row inmate

HUNTSVILLE, Texas, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Lawyers mounted a last-ditch appeal for a Texas death row inmate whose case has been championed by Nobel Peace prizewinner Desmond Tutu.

Dominique Green, 30, is scheduled to receive a lethal injection Tuesday for his role in the murder of Andrew Lastrapes Jr. during a 1992 Houston robbery.

Green, who was 18 at the time, has admitted to participating in the robbery with three other men but denies being the triggerman, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday.

His case has drawn the support of Tutu, who earlier this year traveled from South Africa to visit Green on death row. The murder victim's widow and two grown sons have also called on the state to spare Green's life.

Green used drugs and ran with gangs in Houston's tough Third Ward but he said he has turned his life around on death row. He keeps battered notebooks of poetry and drawings and works as counselor for other inmates.

Green's attorneys are concerned the troubled Houston crime lab may have mishandled evidence in the case. They also say racial bias was involved in the prosecution.
