Engine trouble forces emergency landing

CHICAGO, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a United Airlines Boeing 767 forced make an emergency landing after takeoff in Chicago Sunday night.

United Flight 835 took off from O'Hare International Airport about 9:50 p.m. en route to Sao Paulo, Brazil, when sparks and flame erupted from an engine. The plane circled over Lake Michigan for about 40 minutes dumping fuel before safely returning to the airport.

None of the 173 passengers or 12 crewmembers was injured, WFLD-TV, Chicago said. The passengers spent the night at an airport hotel and were to travel to Brazil on another plane Monday.

Broadcast reports said the pilot thought a bird may have been sucked into the engine causing a compressor failure.

An American Airlines MD-80 jetliner carrying 112 passengers and crewmembers made a safe emergency landing at O'Hare last month after flying into a flock of birds and losing an engine.
