Mortars rain on Gaza settlements

GAZA, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Palestinian militants fired mortars at Jewish settlements in Gaza overnight in retaliation for Israel's killing two Hamas militants.

Israel Radio said between 25 and 35 mortars crashed into the settlements, sending settlers into panic and inflicting property damage but no casualties.

Israel's daily Yediot Ahronot said on its Web site Friday heavy mortar fire targeted the Gaza settlements, especially Naveh Dakaleem in the center of the strip.

The paper said the mortars started raining down shortly after Israel killed two Hamas militants in an airstrike late Thursday.

"The Israeli army fears the firing of mortars will continue on the settlements and Qassam rockets would be fired again at Israeli targets inside Israel itself," the paper said.

"Anyway, the army does not regret the killing of the Hamas militants."

One of the dead militants was top Hamas commander Adnan Ghoul.
