Kissinger visits Ukrainian president

KIEV, Ukraine, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma met with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger Friday, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported.

The two men discussed the development of Ukrainian-U.S. relations, in particular, the state and prospects of trade and economic cooperation and political dialogue, Interfax-Ukraine said.

Kissinger said Ukraine had made considerable progress in the years of its independence and spoke about Ukraine's role in global politics, the news agency said. It quoted a statement from the presidential administration in Kiev.

The meeting also addressed the upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine scheduled to be held Oct. 31 and in the United States on Nov. 2. Kuchma told Kissinger that Ukraine is doing everything to ensure democratic elections, the news agency said.
