YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Two Japanese mountain climbers were killed this week when an early-season Pacific storm swept through California's Yosemite National Park.
The bodies of the two victims were spotted Wednesday dangling from Yosemite's famed El Capitan, a sheer granite face that is among the most challenging climbing destinations in the United States.
The Fresno Bee said rescue crews were atop El Capitan and would attempt to recover the bodies Thursday while looking for others lost in the area.
The identities of the Japanese pair were not immediately released.
The early blizzard dumped waist-deep snow on the Sierra and caused white-out conditions in many areas. Several climbers and hikers were reported missing or had to be rescued.
The weather system that pounded California this week was moving east Thursday bringing thunderstorm and snow advisories to Colorado, Utah and New Mexico.
