TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- The Florida Southern Christian Leadership Conference has sent a letter to the Justice Department complaining of voter harassment by Republicans.
The letter requesting an investigation was sent last week, the Florida Times-Union reports.
Florida Republican Party spokesman Joseph Agostini called the claims by the SCLC "preposterous, ridiculous and beyond the pale."
The SCLC said the evidence included 2,500 suspicious voter registration forms sent to the Leon County elections office, a telephone campaign telling African-American voters they can vote with sample ballots or by phone and a petition campaign targeting young prospective voters favoring legalization of marijuana.
The SCLC said it was all an attempt to hinder minority voting.
"In my 22 years in civil rights, the only thing I've seen reminiscent of this is the shenanigans and antics of Watergate. We are very concerned," said Leon County SCLC President Sevell Brown.
