TOKYO, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Japan's Empress Michiko fretted publicly about popular Crown Princess Masako's battle with depression and urged her to overcome it, The Telegraph reports.
The empress urged her son, Crown Prince Naruhito, and his staff to aid Masako's recovery and said the Imperial Household Agency must work to resolve problems.
In May, Naruhito told a news conference bureaucrats had "denied Masako's career and her character," and that was why she was suffering. There have also been reports she is under considerable pressure to produce a male heir.
The empress is an influential figure in the palace and is respected in Japan, especially as she herself once had trouble adapting to the imperial household, the newspaper said.
Masako, 40, a former diplomat, has hardly been seen in public since withdrawing from public duties last December.
However, she appeared relaxed as the imperial family arrived for a birthday dinner Wednesday at the palace.
